Wealth, fame, fortune.
The man who had acquired everything in this world, the Pirate King, Gold Roger!
The man who had acquired everything in this world, the Pirate King, Gold Roger!
There are three markers to determine success on the high seas: Wealth, Fame, and Fortune.
Wealth
Wealth is straightforward. By posting and completing plots and threads, your character will earn Beli, which can be used to buy stuff! Beli comes in many forms, and you can choose what that number means for your character.
Wealth is normally earned at a rate of 1000 Beli per post in standard threads (see Threads & Posting for more on that).
- Pirates in PVP threads earn ten times this number!
- Bounty Hunters participating in PVP threads, on the other hand, get paid the bounty of their target pirates if they succeed. If multiple Bounty Hunters work together, however, the bounty is only paid out to the group, not to each.
- Marines and Revolutionaries earn a commission as well for their involvements based on their actions, decided by the thread grader, but their benefit comes more in the form of Fortune and Fame than in Beli.
Fortune
Fortune.
Luck.
Karma.
Fortune is the closest estimate in SotGA's system for Experience Points. By participating in and completing threads, you earn Fortune Points (FP), which are used to purchase techniques for your character to use both in and out of combat. Fortune and Fame go hand in hand, and when you get a certain amount of Fortune, you also get Fame!
Fortune is normally earned at a rate of 1 FP per post in typical threads (again, see Threads & Posting). In PVP threads, it is doubled for everyone involved!
In addition, certain threads, items, and actions may grant additional Fortune. One example is GMed threads, mission threads, or special events. Finally, you may complete Training Threads to earn FP based on the quality of the thread, as graded by a staff member.
Fame
Fame, finally, is the main mark of a great adventurer of the high seas. With increasing ranks of Fame, your character will earn Profession Points (PP), used to increase their skills at their chosen profession or professions, or purchase special skills those professions have access to.
In addition, there are certain general skills and abities that can be purchased with Profession Points by anyone who qualifies... for example, the rare and mysterious Devil Fruits!
At the following amounts of Fortune, your character will gain a level of Fame and a Profession Point to spend as you wish!
You can only get the Fame (and the Profession Point) for a single tier once per character, if you spend enough Fortune to drop back down below that level. Dropping below a tier has no disadvantages at all, in fact.

Vital Stats - The 5 S's
Characters in SoGA are also defined by five physical stats that explain their abilities. While these mostly only come up in PVP scenarios to compare physical ability of two fighters, these can help you gauge what your character can do.
Strength
- Influences close combat damage, lifting ability, and general athleticism. Characters need Strength to hit hard and be able to block powerful attacks, but may still need Speed to get their guard up in time.
Speed
- Influences agility, movement speed, and reflexes. Characters need Speed to be able to dodge effectively, however they'll need Senses to be able to see fast attacks coming.
Stamina
- Influences overall health and durability. Characters with high Stamina can take a lot of punishment, but even these juggernauts can benefit from Speed and Sense to dodge some of it - nobody's immortal.
Sense
- Influences perception and hand-eye coordination. Characters need Sense as much as Speed to be able to attack and dodge effectively, and but without Smarts, even the best navigators can't see the weather coming.
Smarts
- Influences intelligence and quick-wittedness. Characters need Smarts to identify threats and know how to talk their way out of bad situations, as well as being able to understand complex plans and technology.
Starting characters get 1 in each stat, and 5 additional points to spread as they like.
To compare two characters' general abilities, multiply their stats by their Fame and compare the totals.
These stats do not have direct parallels to what they allow you to do, they mostly only exist to compare characters and NPCs in combat situations where mechanics are needed.
However, a 2 in any stat represents the Average, while a 1 is Below Average. Roleplay appropriately.
At any time, a character may spend Profession Points to increase their stats on a 1 for 1 basis. There are no upper limits for stats.
