Here is a rough timeline of major events that occurred in the SotGA Timeline. Major character and backstory events may be added to the site canon if the staff finds them notable enough. You can assume that most things here are common knowledge within reason - your character can have heard about it on the news, for example.
Prior to the Summit War:
No changes from the One Piece series' canon. Everything that happened up until Luffy and the Impel Down escapees arrived in Marineford is still in-canon for this site. The only major change is that nobody ever heard from the Straw Hat Pirates ever again after they were attacked by Bartholomew Kuma in Saobady that day.
Official records state that he killed them.
Ace's Execution / War of the Best:
The majority of the Summit War happened just as in the series, with three major changes:
- Luffy was killed with the same punch from Akainu that killed Ace.
- Red-Haired Shanks never arrived. As a result, Coby, a young Marine who managed to stop the war for a brief moment, was also killed by Admiral Akainu.
- With no significant break in the fighting, the Admirals and other Marines eventually overwhelmed the Whitebeard Pirates and Impel Down escapees who had accompanied Luffy. All but one were recaptured or killed, with many of the captured later executed. The exception was the Fishman, Jimbei. He retreated into the sea and has never been heard from since.
The Year Of Fire:
- Sengoku retired from the position of Fleet Admiral. Aokiji and Akainu were put forward as potential replacements, and the two fought on Banaro Island to determine who best fit the position. In this timeline, however, Akainu not only defeated Aokiji, but killed him in the battle. He became Fleet Admiral but due to his reputation for having killed now two fellow Marines in cold blood, he took his position through fear rather than respect.
- The year following the Summit War during which Akainu was Fleet Admiral, came to be dubbed the Year of Fire due to his actions and the effects they had on the world, burning a seemingly infinite number of bridges. The World Nobles no longer approved of Akainu, and made several decrees to maintain order over the Marines. As Marineford was effectively destroyed in the Summit War, the head of Marine Command was relocated to a newly-constructed base around Mariejois itself, while Marineford was rebuilt as a communications hub rather than a true military base. This act of "overstepping their authority" infuriated Akainu and only furthered their disapproval of his leadership.
- "Black Jack" Barrett, a famed bounty hunter from the Grand Line, appears in the spotlight after having captured the entirety of the Blackbeard Pirates. Admiral Fujitora humbly suggests that the Shichibukai program be abolished in favor of an elite team of Bounty Hunters. Akainu agrees... and orders the Shichibukai bounties immediately reinstated, as well as marking them all to be killed on sight by all Marines. Despite his intent of making them targets for the potential "best bounty hunters in the world", only one other Shichibukai bounty is claimed (dead) - Gekko Moria, by an anonymous bounty hunter. The other Shichibukai are never heard from publicly again.
- By the end of the year, Akainu was seen to have gone mad with power by nearly everyone both higher and lower in rank, and was dishonorably discharged from the Marine Command, with Admiral Kizaru replacing him by unanimous vote. In response, Akainu is said to have attempted to unleash his Magma power in Mariejois, before being stopped by a young World Noble known only as "Devil Killer". Akainu is never publicly heard from again.
- At the end of the year, just after Akainu is removed, Red-Haired Shanks appears alone at the front door of Mariejois, requesting the Straw Hat that belonged to Luffy and the hat worn by "Fire Fist" Ace, which had been taken by the Marines as trophies following their death. Despite initially attempts to attack him being stopped by his Conqueror's Haki, Admiral Fujitora eventually steps forth and orders the Marines to stand down. He hands over the hats in a rare gesture of peace, and confirms to Shanks that Akainu is dead. Shanks takes the hats and leaves, never to be seen again. The same day, Admiral Fujitora resigns in shame at the actions the Marines have taken over the Year of Fire, and he too is never seen again.
The Great Red Wall:
- Fleet Admiral Kizaru, now formally going by Fleet Admiral Borsalino, plans the Great Red Wall to put a stop to anymore "Straw Hat Copycats" and to "finally end this Pirate Era". The wall is a reinforced brick dam made of the Red Line stone itself, placed atop Reverse Mountain to prevent anyone without Marine approval from entering the Grand Line from the Blues. The wall takes two years to build, finishing construction exactly 3 years after the end of the Summit War, but during that time only one pirate crew makes it through the construction zone. It has since prevented any Pirate from the Blues from making it into the Grand Line through the traditional route.
- The years following its construction show more Marine presence in the Grand Line, with them no longer needing to police the Blues as heavily. Pirate activity in the Blues increases in outlying islands far from Marine bases, while the majority of the routes through the first half of the Grand Line now have Marine bases on every island.
The War of the Devils:
- Nearly a decade after the Summit War, a Pirate claiming to be "The King Of Hell", who has obtained the Magma Magma fruit through unknown means, begins a campaign of war across the Blue seas. He hails from the East Blue but little is known about him besides having a crew entirely composed of Devil Fruit users, and his constant boasting about the superiority of those with such powers. While he is stopped by the Marines during his attempt to break down the Great Red Wall, his motto resonates across the seas. For unexplained reasons, many Devil Fruit users across the world surge in popularity as they rebel against the Marines out of spite. The then-Fleet Admiral (having replaced Borsalino following his retirement), a famed Marine swordsman named "Bijou", only makes matters worse by declaring Devil Fruits to be "weapons of the weak" and "cursed powers only the evil rely on", more or less branding their existence on par with piracy.
- The "War" is a long year of crime and danger across the world, with even many of the Marines (being Devil Fruit users themselves) questioning their leadership... and with countless Devil Fruit users killing in self-defense, or hunted down as monsters by panicked civilians, while most Marines are busy with infighting. The War ends when the man who killed Akainu, a World Noble named Lucifer De Jinn, is "promoted" into the role of Fleet Admiral while Bijou is unceremoniously discharged. Known as the "Devil Killer", Lucifer demonstrates that he has the "most powerful Devil Fruit", a Zoan that allows him to become a literal Devil. He makes a public speech that is heard across the world, stating that "the power of the Devil is above good and evil, it is instead the power to make law out of chaos. It is a power that should be used with pride."
- Following his speech, the infighting and warring across the seas rapidly diminishes, but in its aftermath a large number of Devil Fruits are returned to circulation. The following few years see a rapid increase in the trading of Devil Fruits as expensive commodities. The same is said for the market of counterfeit Devil Fruits, which while a dangerous business, proves to be lucrative involving various Kings and Nobles across the world who want to own the fruits rather than actually eat them.
5Y:
Many major events happened roughly five years before the time the play period of SotGA.
- A Marine Base is built on the island of Little Garden, to both steer travelers away from the dangerous island... as well as mount an offensive against the two Giants warring upon it and bring them to Justice.
- A horrible wasting illness ravages the island of Alabasta in the Grand Line, wiping out over a third of its population in a matter of months. Despite the efforts of the Marines and the best doctors in the world, most of the royal family dies and the Kingdom is left in the hands of the then-infant children of Nefertari Vivi, Ramsey and Remses.
- After years of aggressively refusing to join the Marines, the Isshi-100 of Drum Kingdom are effectively guilted into Marine service to cure the plague of Alabasta. They have since remained all but prisoners of the Marine Captain assigned to oversee the island, only allowed to practice medicine when deemed appropriate by the Marines.
- Marines officially declare Kurosaki Island a lost cause, and abandon all support of the island. The remainder of Route 5 is left to become entirely lawless as no Eternal Poses are known to exist for the other islands.
- A Buster Call is triggered for Dawn Island in the East Blue, reducing the island's cities nearly to rubble. The incident is officially declared to be an accident brought on by a Pirate who had created a fake Golden Mushi, rather than an officially sanctioned Buster Call. The few survivors attempt to rebuild but the island is largely a barren wasteland of destroyed villages.
- The King of Ilusia in the West Blue enacts a law making the color blue illegal on the island. Marines begin frantically hiding in their base and never leaving unless ordered to, and only then in their underwear as their uniforms are forbidden (and Marine command refuses to issue custom uniforms). The King also orders that the seas around his island not be blue, and harbormasters begin to dump massive amounts of Green Tea leaves into the sea, turning the water around the island bright green.
- The Black Drum Kingdom in the South Blue suffers a sudden, massive volcanic eruption, coating the entire surface of the island in magma which later freezes into obsidian once the mountain finally goes dormant. The castle and toy factories belonging to the former King Wapol are left the only things still standing due to their impenetrable Wapometal construction.
- The last known Reverie is conducted in Mariejois. Only 32 of the 40 World Noble Families are represented, with the King of Ilusia being the only one not in attendance who communicated his disinterest (he refused to travel across Blue water). The remaining seven Noble families are unable to be reached, prompting an even greater increase in Marine presence across the seas.
The Sunset of the Golden Age:
- Lucifer De Jinn, now the Fleet Admiral for the past 10 Years, begins the year with a declaration:
The Marines themselves have begun seeking Gold Roger's legendary treasure, ONE PIECE, at the end of the Grand Line, to put a final nail in the coffin of piracy forever.
- Rumors also begin to circulate across the seas that the Revolutionary Army, despite having laid dormant for nearly 20 years, has become active again. A new, mysterious leader has taken command of the organization from their secret base of Baltigo, which had been abandoned many years ago. Anonymous messages have been left across the seas, telling people to rise up against the World Government, and promising aid to anyone who does, and in turn many secret bases are built around the world. The Marines currently see this as nothing more than a childish prank, but as more and more reports of civilian uprisings come in, they begin to seek these new Revolutionaries in turn.
